On Monday, June 14, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary held a ceremony at the VFW Hall at 2:00 p.m. to honor area residents and businesses that fly their flag every day of the year.

The idea was conceived by long-time member, Gen Roan. Visitors to the event were treated with several patriotic tunes sung acapella by Danielle and Sabrina Hockett, along with a table full of patriotic treats.

Following the presentation of certificates, Barb Hansen, Auxiliary member, encouraged those present to join the VFW. To serve in the ladies auxiliary, your father, brother, or grandfather must have served in wartime. If you would like to be a part of the charitable work the Ladies Auxiliary does, contact the VFW.

If you are curious about how to properly and respectfully dispose of a faded, torn, or soiled American Flag, bring your flag to the VFW, and every year on Flag Day, they hold a ceremony and burn the old flags.

Thanks to all those who fly their American Flag daily. Your patriotism does not go unnoticed.

Some photos from the event can be found in our photo gallery

On Thursday, May 20th, the members of the Wyoming Black Hills Leadership Institute’s Donald Ray Roby Memorial Park improvement committee were invited by city employees to help them, and some local school kids, to plant some trees and look over the improvements they have been making at the park. The strides that have been made in the parks improvements were exciting to see!

City employee, Travis Peterson, explained to those that attended how the watering system is completely installed, park benches bought with the donations raised by the committee have been installed. The first of eighteen trees have been planted and the BBQ pits will be installed soon. The landscaping is continuing with grass and flowers and shrubbery set to go in soon.

The park will soon be another jewel in the Newcastle City park system. Travis and his fellow workers have once again gone above and beyond the call of duty! It was nice of them to invite the park improvement committee to the tree planting, but the committee knows that the glory and praise should all go to the city employees! They made it happen.

Thank you again to everyone who donated to this project in any way over the last few years. It wouldn’t have happened as fast as it has without your help. To those associates of the Wyoming Black Hills Leadership Institute who formed and served on the committee, to those who donated money, time, and labor installing the engraved marker and planting trees. To everyone involved in any way, Thank You! Most of all, thank you to the City of Newcastle and their employees!

Drive by the Donald Ray Roby Memorial Park in the Saddle subdivision and see the improvements. To find out more about the Wyoming Black Hills Leadership Institute, stop by or, call the UW Cooperative Extension Service Office in Newcastle.

If April showers bring May flowers, then April events in Newcastle must bring out the crowds. Two events that took place recently were met with good turnouts and KASL was there to cover them both.

On April 17th, KASL broadcast live from the Open House at the new business location for Touch of Life Massage Therapy and The Meadowlark Academy of Dance. It’s wonderful to see these two businesses growing and expanding their services to the people of Newcastle and the surrounding area!

On April 24, Shriners from all across Wyoming were in Newcastle for their annual Spring ceremonial. One of the events was to help to dedicate the cornerstone to the new Lodge building. The Shriners also held a parade. Congratulations to Kelly Wood, this year’s Potentate, who brought his fellow Shriners to Newcastle.

For photos from these events, please visit our photo gallery, click on the photo gallery page above, or follow this link.

Many people enjoy spending New Year’s eve out on the town, which can mean a few drinks with friends…This New Year’s eve, enjoy the party, start 2010 off safe, and let someone else take you home! Newcastle’s Free Ride service aims to meet your after party transportation needs, all for little to no cost. Free Ride began offering rides a few months ago, after Allen Kaufman and Scott Weekes saw a need in the community and decided to do what they could to fill it. Allen chose to provide the car, while Scott volunteered his driving skills to the service. In an interview on What’s Happening earlier this year, Scott talked about how the Free Ride service was born out of a strong desire to keep the community safe. If only one life was saved, then it would be all worth it Scott stated, describing how the service allows people who have had a few too many drinks to get a safe ride home by keeping them off the streets and everyone out of harms way.

In addition to the Free Ride for the night-life crowd, the service also operates a bit like a taxi service during the day offering rides to Newcastle destinations for a variety of reasons. Trips to the grocery store, rides to doctors appointments, or jaunts to the library are all examples of how people may use the service.

During the interview, Scott told of a woman who needed to take her cat to the veterinary clinic and how he was more than happy to help out. As the name would imply, cost is not an issue for this fantastic service, as the rides are completely free of charge. Donations to cover the cost of gas are accepted, but not necessary.

We here at KASL would like to thank Scott Weekes and Allen Kaufman for stepping up to meet a need and helping people out.

If you’re in need of transportation within the 15 mile radius of Newcastle, call 629-1682, to get your Free Ride.

Pinnacle Bank hosted their seventh annual Festival of Trees Friday, December 4th to raise money for a local non-profit organization. This year’s recipient of the fundraiser was the Weston County Children’s Center. According to Center Director Jane Rhoads, the money is used for fun ‘extras’ for the kids including science centers, indoor sand boxes and kitchen centers.

Total proceeds collected from the auction were $11,872. Pinnacle Bank provided over forty wreaths and six artificial Christmas trees that were decorated by local businesses and organizations. These beautiful creations were than auctioned off to the public. The top selling wreath, made by A-1 Agency, finally sold for $700 after a good natured bidding war between Butch Townsend of WESCO Gas and Craig Wiggins of Jackmaster Construction. Jackmaster prevailed with the winning bid. Another wreath decorated by the Wyoming Conservation Honor Camp sold for $625. Several generous bidders even donated wreaths back to be resold or displayed at the Children’s Center.

Everyone had a blast at Upton’s centennial celebration! This years annual fun days events in Upton were expanded to honor the all school reunion attendees and Upton’s 100th birthday! Every event was well attended. The planning that went into the celebration was obvious. They were all well organized and went off without a hitch! Congratulations to everyone who served on any of the various committees! Your hard work paid off!

The whole day, on Saturday July 18th, was full of activities that included something for everyone. The parade was one of the biggest that has been seen in this area in a long time. You could tell those who participated and watched were enjoying themselves. The golf tournament, junior rodeo, roping, and games and music in the park gave everyone something to do! After the free BBQ in the park, people converged from all over northeast Wyoming, the Black Hills, and several other states to enjoy the Blackhawk concert at the city baseball diamond. Approximately 2000 people enjoyed a quality show that featured Crome, a local middle school rock and roll band. Upton’s very own, home grown entertainer, Brock Finn and his band put on a great show that got everyone primed for the main event! Blackhawk entertained for almost an hour and a half, playing every one of their top ten hits and more.

It was a great celebration! One worthy of a Centennial Celebration! Good job Upton! Congratulations and Happy Birthday!
